More than 20 health personnel of the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), who had direct contact with a confirmed Lassa fever patient, have tested negative for the virus.
According to a statement signed by the hospital’s Chief Information Officer, Maryam Aminu Usman, on behalf of the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee, Professor Muhammad Abba Suwaid, others who were screened through contact tracing also tested negative—except the patient’s husband, who tested positive.
Prof. Suwaid noted that the affected hospital staff were temporarily isolated and their blood samples collected for testing. “The negative result was due to the diligence and professionalism of AKTH staff in attending to patients,” the statement said.
The hospital had previously confirmed a Lassa fever case in a 22-year-old pregnant woman brought to AKTH on April 5, 2025. Following the confirmation, hospital management swiftly initiated precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the virus within the facility and surrounding areas.
The Kano State Epidemiology Unit has been notified and is handling contact tracing in Garum Malam Local Government Area, from where the patient was referred.
Meanwhile, the patient’s husband, who tested positive, is currently receiving treatment under the supervision of the state epidemiological team.
