Nurses in Ondo State are calling on the government to review their salary structure to align with recent adjustments made for doctors, warning that disparities could lead to discord within the healthcare system.
In a communique to mark the 2024 Ondo Nurses Week/Scientific Conference on Wednesday, the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) raised urgent concerns. Stating, “Two months ago, the salary structure for doctors was revised to match that of their federal counterparts, leaving nurses behind,” stated NANNM chairman Akintobi Orobode.
“This can create disharmony. All health workers deserve equal recognition for their contributions.”
Orobode highlighted the critical role nurses play, often being the primary caregivers for patients. “When nurses refuse to work, what can doctors do? We need a collaborative approach,” Orobode added.
Orobode urged the state government to act quickly to avoid potential crises in the healthcare sector.
While acknowledging the support of Governor Aiyedatiwa, Orobode noted that the association had submitted a formal request for a salary review and is awaiting a response.
In response, Special Adviser on Health Matters, Prof. Simidele Odimayo, assured that plans are underway to review the salary structures for all health workers. “The review process is ongoing, and we are committed to the welfare of all healthcare workers,”Odimayo stated.
