Recently released data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has shown that the North-Central parts of the country recorded the highest number of road traffic crashes (RTC) in the third quarter of 2022 with 1,169 cases and the highest number of casualties numbering up to 3,086.
It was followed by the South West and South East with 872 and 185 cases respectively, while the South West and South East regions recorded 2,608 and 520 casualties respectively.
The NBS report, released on Monday, also indicated an increase in the total number of crashes across the country with 3,412 cases recorded, a 3.96 percent rise from the 3,282 recorded in the second quarter and a 8.87 percent rise from the 3,134 recorded in the third quarter of 2021.
The report also noted that although serious and minor cases increased by 11.02 percent and 0.28 percent respectively, fatal cases reduced by 12.52 percent.
Men also accounted for the majority of casualties from road crashes with 1,155 dead and 7,062 injured, making up 76.28 percent of the total number of injured persons and 78.25 percent mortality.
NBS, in its report, attributed a majority of these crashes to speed violation, use of phone while driving, tyre burst and mechanically deficient vehicles among others.
