The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Kano State Chapter has given the Kano State Government a 48-hour ultimatum to dismiss the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Amina Abdullahi HOD, following an alleged assault on a female doctor.
The incident, which occurred on November 1st at the Emergency Paediatric Unit of Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, involved the Commissioner and her entourage harassing and assaulting the doctor over the unavailability of a prescribed medication.
The doctor was reportedly managing over 100 patients alone.
In a press statement signed by the NMA Kano Chairman, Dr. Abdurrahman Ali, and Secretary, Dr. Ibrahim D. Muhammad, the association condemned the Commissioner’s actions as an abuse of power and a violation of ethical standards.
“This assault not only undermines the health sector’s integrity but also violates the ethical obligations public officials should uphold. Such behaviour endangers healthcare workers and disrupts essential services,” said Dr. Ali.
The NMA Kano has demanded the immediate dismissal of the Commissioner and an increase in staffing and security at the hospital. If their demands are not met, the association has threatened to suspend medical services at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.
“Our decision to suspend services is difficult but necessary. Healthcare professionals should not have to work in fear,” Dr. Ali explained.
The association has called on the Kano State Governor to take swift action to address the issues raised and prevent further disruptions in the healthcare system.
