NIHSA Issues Flood Alert as River Niger Water Levels Rise

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a public alert regarding rising water levels in the River Niger system as of August 23, 2024.

In a statement released by Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, Director General of NIHSA, the agency highlighted that increased water levels are due to floodwaters from upstream activities in Niger and Mali.

The Niger Basin Authority (NBA) in Niamey, Niger Republic, has reported that these floodwaters are expected to gradually flow into Nigeria, beginning with Kebbi State.

“The dams at Kainji and Jebba on the River Niger have been informed and are prepared for the incoming water. As of August 22, 2024, the dams are not spilling water from their reservoirs,” said Mohammed.

NIHSA has urged all states and communities along the River Niger system to remain vigilant through the end of August and into September. The agency will continue to monitor the situation and provide periodic updates to the public.
