The Nigerian Navy has rescued all 59 crew members from the MV Ambika 4, a dredging vessel in distress near Okpobo River.
The vessel, contracted by Sterling Global Oil Limited, was at risk of sinking in turbulent waters.
A distress call prompted a swift response from the Navy Forward Operating Base Bonny, which dispatched a rescue team led by Lieutenant Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza.
The operation involved 10 armed personnel in two interceptor boats, with additional support from a squadron of three boats, Nigerian Navy Ship Gongola, drones, and helicopters from both the Navy and Nigerian Air Force.
Despite the challenging conditions, the rescue mission was successful. However, Lieutenant Commander Gwaza tragically lost his life during the operation.
According to a statement sent to Africa Health Report, (AHR) on Friday, Commodore A. Adams-Aliu, Director of Information, stated, “Lieutenant Commander Gwaza’s bravery and sacrifice are a testament to the dedication and risks faced by our personnel.”
The rescue operation lasted approximately 10 hours, beginning on the night of July 29 and concluding on the morning of July 30, 2024, according to the statement.
