The Nigerian judiciary has been condemned for its role in perpetuating oppression.
A social critic and lawyer, Dele Farotimi made the assertions on Friday in an interview monitored by Africa Health Report, AHR on Channels Television’s Inside Sources, that judges are increasingly manipulated by powerful politicians to stifle the voices of ordinary citizens.
Farotimi said, “The judicial system has become a tool for the oppression of the weak.”
He highlighted the recent criminalisation of the August 2024 #EndBadGovernance protests, pointing out how state governments sought court injunctions to prevent citizens from exercising their right to peaceful assembly.
“Peaceful protesters are being charged with treason,” he lamented. “The judiciary has become complicit in the oppression and suppression of the Nigerian people.”
Farotimi criticised the judiciary’s failure to serve the common man, noting, “Only the rich can get a vestige of justice within the system.” He described a hopeless situation where many lawyers feel they cannot expect justice in court, stating, “I go there just in case people ask what I do.”
Calling for urgent reforms, Farotimi streesed the need for a truly impartial judicial system, remarking, “The Nigerian judiciary is in serious need of a turnaround.”
He added by asserting that systemic change is essential: “If we don’t call ourselves back, it will be beyond redemption very soon.”
