Nigeria Urges US to Reconsider New Visa Restrictions

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged the United States to reverse its recent decision to drastically shorten visa validity periods for certain categories of Nigerian travellers.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the ministry described the move as “concerning” and said it was misaligned with the principles of reciprocity, equity, and mutual respect.

Earlier this week, Washington announced adjustments to its visa reciprocity schedule, reducing the validity of B1/B2 (business and tourism), F (student), and J (exchange visitor) non-immigrant visas for Nigerian citizens to just three months with single entry.

Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa said the Federal Government viewed the development with concern and keen interest, particularly given the longstanding cordial relations and strong people-to-people ties between both countries.

The ministry warned that the policy would impact a wide range of Nigerians, including students pursuing education in the US, professionals engaged in business, and families undertaking legitimate visits.

While acknowledging America’s sovereign right to determine its immigration policies, Nigeria called for fairness in such decisions.

“Nigeria respectfully urges the United States to reconsider this decision in the spirit of partnership, cooperation, and shared global responsibilities,” the statement added.

The Ministry confirmed that diplomatic engagements with Washington are currently ongoing.
