Nigeria confirmed six new cases of Mpox between September 29 and October 6, 2024, as reported by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
This marks a decrease from ten cases in the previous week. “Six confirmed cases were reported in week 40 compared with ten in week 39,” the NCDC stated in its latest situation report on Monday.
The report highlighted that 25 states and the Federal Capital Territory have recorded at least one case this year, affecting 63 Local Government Areas.
Mpox symptoms typically begin with fever, headaches, and extreme fatigue, followed by a distinctive rash.
Since September 2017, Nigeria has seen 5,114 suspected cases, with 1,180 confirmed, resulting in 17 fatalities.
The widespread nature of the disease has affected all 36 states and FCT.
The NCDC emphasised its commitment to managing the outbreak through its National Mpox Emergency Operation Center, which coordinates efforts among various stakeholders.
This includes enhancing surveillance, guiding case management, and conducting public awareness campaigns.
