The Federal Government has set in motion a strategic plan to reclaim Nigeria’s Category ‘C’ seat on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, ahead of the elections slated for November/December 2024.
According to a statement sent to Africa Health Report (AHR) on Wednesday by the FMM&BE head of Press and Public Relations Muhammad Tahir Zakari the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy Adegboyega Oyetola, inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee in Abuja to spearhead the nation’s campaign for the seat.
Speaking at the inauguration, Oyetola highlighted the committee’s critical role in boosting Nigeria’s chances by effectively showcasing the country’s maritime accomplishments.
He urged the committee to outline a clear timeline of activities and establish progress checkpoints to ensure that the campaign remains on track.
“We must deploy strategic and coordinated efforts to solicit votes, backed by a comprehensive display of Nigeria’s maritime achievements,” the minister stated.
A key highlight of the event was a presentation by Dr. Dayo Mobereola, the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
Mobereola handed over six critical IMO/International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions, which had remained unsigned for the past six to eight years. He praised Oyetola for taking decisive action in finalizing these long-pending international agreements.
“These conventions, now signed, are a significant milestone and a testament to the minister’s commitment to advancing Nigeria’s maritime agenda,” Mobereola noted.
He further explained that the ratification of these conventions aligns with the performance objectives set for Oyetola by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
These objectives include key performance indicators (KPIs) that demonstrate the minister’s progress in strengthening Nigeria’s maritime sector.
Oyetola’s initiative comes at a time when Nigeria is aiming to enhance its presence on the global maritime stage. Securing a seat on the IMO Council would enable the country to contribute to and influence international maritime regulations and policies, ensuring that Nigeria’s interests are well represented.
The newly inaugurated committee will focus on developing a robust campaign strategy that includes targeted outreach and engagement with member states of the IMO.
This diplomatic push is expected to emphasize Nigeria’s recent maritime advancements and underscore its commitment to international safety and environmental standards.
The minister stressed that success in the upcoming election would not only validate Nigeria’s efforts but would also bolster its leadership role in maritime affairs on the African continent and beyond.
“This campaign is an opportunity for us to reinforce our maritime capabilities and project Nigeria as a proactive and responsible member of the international community,” Oyetola remarked.
