Nigeria has confirmed 67 Mpox cases out of 1,031 suspected cases across 23 states and the Federal Capital Territory, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).
Speaking at a conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Dr. Jide Idris, Director General of the NCDC, said that the agency has enhanced surveillance efforts. “We are working with the port health authority to prevent the importation of Clade I of Mpox into the country,” Idris stated.
He added, “The port health authority is also collaborating with border states to ensure this clade does not enter.”
Dr. Idris noted the efforts to improve laboratory capabilities for accurate Mpox detection. “Not all our laboratories are equipped to test Mpox effectively, so we are optimising them to reduce the need for cross-state sample transfers. Awareness creation is also a key part of our strategy,” he said.
Confirmed cases have been reported in several states: Akwa-Ibom (8), Enugu (8), Bayelsa (6), and others. The Federal Capital Territory has reported three cases, while Lagos and Imo have each confirmed three cases.
