NCC Unveils Telecom Tariff Reforms to Streamline Consumer Choices

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has unveiled its intention to implement a new tariff system for telecom operators, starting on December 13, 2024.

This initiative seeks to streamline service choices, enhance transparency, and address ongoing issues related to data and airtime consumption.

During a press conference in Abuja, it was announced that the reform will restrict operators to a maximum of seven tariff plans. Mr. Reuben Muoka, the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, who spoke on behalf of the Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, stated that this decision comes after thorough discussions with stakeholders.

Muoka stated that our aim is to ease the burden on consumers and clarify any misunderstandings about their telecom costs.

A key aim of the new policy is to tackle consumer complaints, especially concerning fast data depletion. Audits conducted by the NCC indicated that differences in data consumption among devices, particularly Android smartphones, are frequently due to app configurations and background operations.

Dr. Maida highlighted the significance of consumer awareness, stating, “The configuration of devices greatly affects data usage. Teaching users how to adjust these settings can enable them to manage their consumption more effectively.”

Alongside the tariff reforms, the NCC has instructed operators to refresh their contact information by January 9, 2025, as required by the 2019 Licensing Regulations. Failure to comply could result in penalties, including fines or the revocation of licenses.

The commission is increasing its efforts to educate the public through awareness initiatives and advocacy, facilitating a seamless transition to the new tariff system while enhancing regulatory oversight.
