NASU, SSANU Begin Indefinite Strike over Salaries

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching staff unions, comprising the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), has announced an indefinite strike over withheld salaries.

The strike will officially commence at midnight on Sunday, October 27, 2024.

According to a circular from the leadership of NASU and SSANU, on Sunday, the strike date was rescheduled from October 23 to ensure effective coordination between the unions. “We have to do this strategic change in timing for effective coordination and for both unions to be on the same page,” the circular stated.

The unions are protesting the non-payment of four months of salaries for their members, despite President Bola Tinubu’s approval to release 50 per cent of these funds. “The sincerity of the government to our cause is in doubt,” the unions stated, criticising the alleged inaction of the Minister of Finance.

The leadership expressed appreciation for the support of their members, affirming their commitment to the cause: “We will persist in this struggle until ultimate victory is secured.”
