The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has refuted claims circulating on social media that it approved a herbal product allegedly capable of making smoking healthy.
In a statement released to Africa Health Report (AHR) on Sunday, NAFDAC dismissed the video promoting Lung Detox Tea, also known as Lungitox (Smokers Pride), as “false and completely unfounded.”
“The product in question is NOT registered by NAFDAC. The unscrupulous individual behind this product had applied for registration, but the application was outrightly rejected due to the unsubstantiated and dangerous claim that smoking could be made ‘healthy’ by consuming the product,”
NAFDAC emphasized its commitment to scientific validation, stating that no herbal or related products are allowed to make therapeutic claims without proper clinical trials. The agency reassured Nigerians that it remains steadfast in safeguarding public health and warned against being misled by unverified claims.
“We condemn any attempt to mislead or endanger the public with false claims. NAFDAC will never permit the importation, exportation, manufacture, advertisement, distribution, sale, or use of products with claims that lack scientific basis,” the statement added.
NAFDAC urged the public to disregard the video and report suspicious products through its official channels, including its toll-free number 0800-162-3322 or email at sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
The agency vowed to take decisive action against any individual or entity attempting to breach public health standards.
