Enugu State is transforming its primary healthcare landscape with the construction of 260 modern health centres across its 260 wards, aimed at drastically reducing maternal and infant mortality.
The Executive Secretary and CEO of the Enugu State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Ifeyinwa Ani-Osheku, said on Sunday, “When Governor Peter Mbah assumed office in 2023, he initiated a comprehensive assessment that revealed over 85 percent of the facilities needed major upgrades. That’s why we embarked on this massive project to ensure no community member walks more than 10 minutes to reach a primary health centre.”
She confirmed that over 100 centres are already completed and operational.
To ensure these facilities deliver quality services, the state is going beyond infrastructure by investing in manpower and essential resources.
“This is the first time Enugu is going beyond the conventional norms of staffing. We’ve recruited 45 medical doctors, 2,200 healthcare workers, and engaged NYSC corps members—including doctors, pharmacists, and nurses,” Ani-Osheku said.
Each centre will be powered by solar energy, have solar boreholes, and stock over 150 essential medicines. “Our goal is not just to lead in Southeast Nigeria but to set a record for excellence nationwide—and globally,” she added.
Ani-Osheku also highlighted the government’s intensified public health campaigns, especially through Child Health Week.
“Unlike previous outreach approaches, we now carry out these activities within the health facilities to familiarise communities with their centres and build trust,” she explained.
The programme provides immunisation, nutrition education, deworming, and HPV vaccination for girls.
She noted, “Governor Mbah also ensured all schools of nursing are accredited to produce qualified nurses. Our tomorrow is here, and our people deserve the best.”
