Amid the current economic crisis occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidies, a former Nigerian lawmaker, Ben Murray-Bruce has suggested a new initiative that he believes would help improve public health.

Ben Murray-Bruce, a former member of the Nigerian Senate, has called on the incoming Minister of Health and the federal government to launch a free condom distribution program aimed at reducing the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

Mr. Murray-Bruce made this suggestion on Monday on his Twitter handle @benmurraybruce as part of a broader effort to alleviate some of the economic hardships currently being experienced by Nigerians.

The former lawmaker wrote: “In light of the deepening economic challenges that Nigeria faces, which have gravely impacted the middle class and exacerbated poverty levels, the incoming Minister of Health or the federal government must launch a free condom distribution initiative immediately.

“Ensuring accessibility to contraceptives is a crucial step in mitigating a potential population explosion, particularly when the financially constrained majority may prioritise necessities over family planning methods. An ounce of prevention now can avert a looming socio-economic catastrophe in the future.”

Many Nigerians have eagerly supported the former Senator’s proposal, with some saying that it was long overdue. However, others have criticized the suggestion, saying that it would encourage promiscuous behaviour and that the money should rather be channeled into productive projects.
