Kwara Demotes Teacher for Assaulting NYSC Member at School

The Kwara State government has demoted a teacher, Hajia Fatimoh Hamzat Nike, for physically assaulting a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member posted to the Government Day Junior Secondary School in Ilorin.

The demotion follows a series of actions triggered by the incident.

In a statement released on Wednesday by the state’s Commissioner for Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, and the Chairman of the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission, Mallam Bello Abubakar, it was revealed that an investigative panel found the teacher guilty of several offenses.

These included fighting on duty, using foul language, insubordination, and disrespecting the national identity symbolised by the corps member’s uniform.

As a result, the teacher was demoted by two grade levels and will be transferred to another school to undergo counseling as part of her corrective measures.

The government expressed its deep regret over the incident, which it said does not represent the values of Kwara State.

The action follows a threat from the NYSC, which withdrew all corps members from the Government Day Secondary School, demanding the state’s intervention. “Until the state government takes action against the teachers who assaulted our members, no NYSC member will serve at this school.”

The Kwara State government reassured the NYSC and the public that the behaviour of the teacher was an isolated incident and inconsistent with the values the state upholds.
