The Executive Chairman of the Jigawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Professor Haruna Musa, has announced plans to incorporate the MuKaranta Hausa Literacy for Prosperity module into the state’s primary school curriculum.
This move is aimed at bolstering the literacy skills of Hausa-speaking pupils.
Speaking at a one-day end-line assessment and dissemination event, Professor Musa expressed his satisfaction with the program’s success in improving pupils’ foundational literacy.
He commended the MuKaranta Literacy Resources Limited and Bono Energy for their contributions to the state’s education sector.
“We are in discussions with them on how the program will be sustained and expanded to more local governments,” the SUBEB chairman stated.
While acknowledging the program’s achievements, Professor Musa also highlighted the challenges it faces, urging mothers and School-Based Management Committees (SBMC) to take ownership of their local schools.
He assured them of the government’s commitment to providing necessary learning and teaching materials.
The MuKaranta State Programme Coordinator, Mr. Bashir Yakubu, reported significant progress in the pupils’ literacy skills. He noted that within eighteen months of the program’s implementation, pupils’ ability to recognize letters had increased from 2% to 92%.
Mr Yakubu revealed that the MuKaranta Literacy Programme had reached over 22,500 pupils in 198 schools.
He added that discussions are underway with the Jigawa State Government and donor partners to extend the program’s duration.
