The Jigawa State Government has made genotype testing compulsory for all intending couples as part of efforts to reduce the prevalence of sickle cell disease and promote public health.

The announcement was made on Thursday, July 25, 2025, by Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Hamisu Mohammed Gumel, following a State Executive Council meeting in Dutse.

“This policy is not meant to discourage marriage,” said Chief Press Secretary Gumel, “but to help couples make informed decisions that can prevent the spread of sickle cell disorder.”

Under the new directive, intending couples must present medical reports confirming their genotypes before receiving marriage clearance from religious, traditional, or civil authorities.

The decision, based on a proposal by the Ministry of Women Affairs, has prompted the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Health to begin drafting legislation. A sensitisation committee led by the Attorney-General has also been set up.

Meanwhile, the government approved over ₦900 million for clean water supply projects and ₦549 million to support 160 Jigawa medical students relocated from Sudan to Cyprus due to conflict, covering tuition, transcript fees, and remedial classes.
