Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has announced that preliminary investigations conducted by security agencies have revealed the cause of the explosion that occurred in the Bodija Area of Ibadan on Tuesday.

According to the governor, on Wednesday, the blast was triggered by explosive devices stored by illegal miners.

The explosion resulted in the tragic loss of at least 10 lives, with 15 individuals hospitalized.

It also caused damage to several structures, including the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Oyo State House of Assembly, and the residence of former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige. Other affected areas include Ologuneru, Apete, New Garage, Bashorun, Akobo, Sango, and Eleyele.

Governor Makinde visited the scene of the explosion on Tuesday night and confirmed ongoing investigations while ensuring that those responsible would be held accountable.

He stated, “Preliminary investigations by the security agencies revealed that illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija had stored explosive devices there which caused the blast. The investigations are ongoing. All those found culpable for this will be brought to book,” he tweeted.

Though initial reports suggested the recovery of 10 bodies, the governor corrected the figures, confirming the death of two individuals and 77 injured victims.

Makinde expressed his condolences, saying, “May their souls rest in peace and may God give their loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

Medical personnel remained on standby at various hospitals to provide necessary assistance to the injured, and the government pledged to take further measures as needed.”

He also assured that the government would cover the medical bills of those injured and provide support to affected residents in rebuilding their lives
