Illicit Drugs Consumption Threat to Pregnancy, President MWAN Warns Women

In a recent discussion hosted by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Prof. Rosemary Ogu, the National President of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria, issued a stark warning to expectant mothers about the dangers of using illicit drugs during pregnancy.

Prof. Ogu emphasised that such actions can have severe consequences on the health and well-being of both mothers and babies.

During the discussion on substance abuse in pregnancy, Ogu highlighted the potential risks associated with illicit drug use, including miscarriage, preterm labour, birth defects, stillbirth, and withdrawal symptoms in newborns.

She also pointed out the increased likelihood of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), poor fetal growth rates, and cognitive and behavioral problems.

“Prevention is key. Let’s work together to ensure a safe and healthy journey for mothers and their little ones,” Ogu urged, stressing the importance of prioritising a healthy pregnancy to avoid these devastating effects.
