The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has secured the conviction of Saifullahi Haruna, an officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service, for defrauding a job seeker.

According to a statement signed by Director of Public Enlightenment and Education, Demola Bakare “Mr. Haruna… fraudulently obtained the sum of N140,000.00 in instalments from his victim… under the pretense that he was going to secure employment for him in the Nigeria Immigration Service.”

The ICPC explained that Haruna failed to secure the job nor refund the money until a petition was filed against him.

“The convict was arraigned before a Katsina State High Court on a one-count charge which borders on obtaining by deceit and abuse of office,” Bakare stated.

Delivering judgment, Justice A.B Abdullahi ruled: “The court hereby accepts the Plea Bargain… The convict is hereby sentenced to pay a fine of N10,000.00… in default of payment of which, the convict shall serve one year imprisonment.”

The judge also ordered that the recovered amount be returned to the victim, Adamu Ibrahim, if not already done.
