The Ogun State government has launched a statewide monitoring exercise to regulate transport fares and ensure fair practices in the transportation sector.
This initiative, led by Governor Dapo Abiodun, aims to cushion the economic pressures caused by rising fuel costs.
The Task Force Control of Transport Fares of Motorists and Unethical Practices by Filling Stations was inaugurated by the state’s Ministry of Transportation.
Honourable Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Dairo Olugbenga, explained that the move responds to public concerns about rising transportation costs.
The task force will mitigate financial pressures and promote fair practices among transport unions and filling stations.
Olugbenga emphasized that the government wants to “feel the pulse of the people of Ogun State” and ensure they are not overburdened by transportation costs.
The commissioner added, “Our goal is to ensure that they are not being overburdened by transportation costs. We have engaged with union leaders, instructing them not to increase ticket prices under the guise of fuel price hikes.
“While the fuel price increase has significantly impacted transportation costs nationwide, it is imperative that we alleviate this burden on our citizens.”

The task force comprises stakeholders, including the Department of State Services, Nigeria Police Force, National Union of Road Transport Workers, Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, and Ogun State Park and Management Committee.
The monitoring team, led by Engr. Adebola Onakoya, has visited major towns and transport hubs, including Abeokuta, Sagamu, Ogijo, Ijebu Ode, and Ago-Iwoye. Onakoya stressed that the exercise is ongoing, and the government remains committed to ensuring convenient and affordable transportation.
Commercial drivers have appreciated the state government’s initiative.
One of the transporters who simply gave his name as Tee-Jay in Sango, noted that transport unions have refrained from increasing ticket prices despite high fuel costs.
However, some passengers urge the government to regulate transport fares further and address the deteriorating road conditions.
Passengers acknowledge the government’s efforts but seek sustained control over rising fuel prices.
