A heavy downpour on Wednesday morning led to the collapse of eight buildings and displacement of several residents in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The rain, which began around 6:15 a.m. and lasted over three hours, flooded communities including Bulumkutu Abuja, Moduganari, Ngomari, and other low-lying areas.
“I started seeing water coming in after an hour of the rain. I immediately took my children and wife to a safe area,” said Ahmodu Ibrahim, a resident of Bulumkutu Abuja.
Aisha Suraju, a shop owner, also shared her ordeal. “My provisions, especially the ones on the floor, were all destroyed by the flood,” she said.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement by its spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso. “Unfortunately, eight buildings collapsed but no casualties were recorded,” the statement read.
Daso added that the Command had deployed patrol teams across affected areas and stationed officers at strategic points to prevent looting.
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, urged residents to remain calm.
“Parents should monitor their children and keep them away from floodwaters to avoid accidents,” he advised.
