An environmental consultant, Mr. Ijeoma Stanley has highlighted the importance of recycling as the best alternative to addressing plastic pollution in the country.

According to a United Nations report, over 430 million tons of plastic are produced annually, with 2/3 becoming short-lived waste.

The report also emphasized the harmful effects of microplastics on aquatic life and human health.

In an exclusive interview with the African Health Report (AHR) on Monday, Mr. Stanley emphasised that recycling not only aligns with Nigeria’s inclusive secular economy aspirations but also helps address various public health challenges such as cholera, typhoid, water contamination, and air pollution.

He said; “It also creates a new market for sustainable products because we are creating a new sustainable market for those products that are being recycled.

“Recycling creates green jobs and wealth creation opportunities, as well as helps meet international obligations regarding plastic pollution control, greenhouse gas emissions, and Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).”
