Doctors Withdraw Services at Kano Hospital After Assault on Female Doctor

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Kano State has announced an indefinite suspension of medical services at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital following the assault of a female doctor at the hospital’s Emergency Paediatric Unit.

The action, confirmed in a statement by the NMA’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Muhammad Aminu Musa, comes after the Kano State Government failed to take significant action in response to the incident, despite a 48-hour ultimatum issued by the association.

The assault, which occurred earlier this week, involved the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, who allegedly led the harassment of the female doctor.

According to an investigation conducted by the Ministry of Health, the doctor was found to have acted professionally and was not at fault during the incident.

Despite the findings, no disciplinary measures have been taken against the Commissioner, prompting the NMA to take a stand. Dr. Musa emphasized that the association’s decision to withdraw services was not taken lightly but was necessary to protect healthcare workers from further harm.

“The NMA Kano has outlined three key demands,” Dr. Musa said. “Firstly, we call for the immediate dismissal of the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs. Secondly, we demand adequate staffing and resource allocation to improve working conditions. Finally, we require enhanced security measures at all hospital units to protect both healthcare workers and patients.”

The NMA has expressed its commitment to patient care and safety but stressed that healthcare professionals must work in an environment where their dignity and safety are upheld.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who has previously made strides to improve healthcare in the state, including the renovation and equipping of Hasiya Bayero Pediatric Hospital and granting approval for free healthcare services for children, now faces pressure to address the concerns raised by the NMA.

While his past efforts have been praised, the current situation underscores the need for swift action to restore trust and ensure a safe working environment for healthcare professionals.

As of now, Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital remains closed to new patients, and the NMA has pledged to continue its fight for justice and reforms in the healthcare sector.
