Doctors Outline Future Actions if Kidnapped Colleague Not Freed

The National Association of Resident Doctors, (NARD) has detailed its next steps if Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, kidnapped over nine months ago, is not released by the end of their seven days warning strike.

Dr. Dele Abdullahi, NARD’s national president, clarified in an interview with Africa Health Report, AHR, on Monday that the ongoing strike is a total withdrawal of services, not a partial one. “Doctors will halt all patient services, though admitted patients will receive palliative care. No concessions or emergency services will be available during this period,” he said.

When asked about future actions if Dr. Popoola remains captive, Abdullahi stated, “We will assess the government’s response and our situation to decide whether to extend the strike or escalate to an indefinite one.”

He elaborated on the situation surrounding Dr. Popoola’s abduction, which occurred on December 27, 2023. Abdullahi explained, “Initially, we supported diplomatic efforts as the family requested. Despite our ongoing engagement with both the kidnappers and security agencies, there has been no resolution, which led to our current strike.”

He expressed frustration and urgency, saying, “We cannot simply stand by and watch our colleague perish in captivity. This is a desperate plea for our security agencies to act swiftly and secure the release of our member.”
