The Director of the National Mathematical Centre, Prof. Promise Mebine, has urged the National Universities Commission (NUC) to upgrade its status to a university.
Speaking during a workshop held at the centre’s premises in Abuja on Friday, Mebine noted that the proposed University of Mathematical Sciences would improve the teaching and learning of mathematics-related courses in Nigeria.
Established in 1988, the National Mathematical Centre boasts over 127 hectares of land with abundant resources. However, Mebine said it is yet to fulfil its mandate.
“For the centre to fulfil its mandate effectively, it has to be converted to the National University of Mathematical Sciences,” he said.
The director explained that the university would not offer undergraduate programmes but would focus on postgraduate degree programmes such as Masters and Ph.D in its five core areas including Mathematics, Computer Science, Theoretical Physics, Statistics and Mathematical Sciences Education.
He disclosed that a letter of request has been written to the NUC for the upgrade.
Speaking at the workshop, Dr. Jimoh Ajani, who represented the acting Executive Secretary of the NUC, Chris Maiyaki, promised that the request would be reviewed.
Ajani used the opportunity to commend President Bola Tinubu ”for his love for the education sector.”
