Candidates to Take UTME Exams With Personal Devices, Says JAMB

By Gom Mirian

The Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) has disclosed its plan to adopt a new policy called ‘Bring Your Own Devices (BYOW) mechanism where candidates wishing to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) would be required to use their personal phone devices to take the examination.

Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, disclosed this in Abuja during the 2023 policy meeting on admission to tertiary institutions in Nigeria on Saturday.

According to Oloyede, the decision was proposed by the board in order to cut down the rising cost of logistics in administering examinations across the country. He also called for the establishment of a mobile court to try candidates involved in examination malpractices for speedy prosecution and reduction of cost of execution on the board.

He said: ” It cost the Board over N1.2 billion to equip a CBT centre in Kaduna State, particularly in procuring computers which candidates use to take the examination.

‘The policy which falls under the “Bring Your Own Device” may require candidates wishing to take UTME in the future to bring their own devices to the examination hall.”

While condemning the wide disparity in admission quotas in the country, he urged aspiring undergraduates to explore other options within the tertiary education sector.
