The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has taken an unconventional approach to addressing power infrastructure vandalism and electricity theft by publicly cursing perpetrators.
In a post on its official X handle, BEDC condemned those who vandalize transformers and those who bypass electricity meters, declaring: “E no go beta for who dey vandalize transformer and who dey bypass.”
The post quickly gained traction online, eliciting diverse reactions from users. While some found the unusual stance humorous, others criticized the electricity provider.
A user, #RowlandJ_nior, jokingly remarked, “Them don employ Osas as SM manager.” Similarly, #deluxe_K added, “Amen… same applies to who does not give light but keeps increasing tariff…”
However, not all responses were lighthearted. #Eromoseileso argued that BEDC should improve its monitoring methods, stating, “BEDC should have a means of knowing who bypassed without physical inspection. For the transformer vandals, if there is constant electricity, they won’t dare it. However, my wish for all vandals is that they get electrocuted at the spot.”
Another user, #JOECRACK001, was surprised by BEDC’s public declaration, commenting, “See wetin company dey talk online..”
While BEDC’s statement underscores the growing concern over power theft and infrastructure damage, its approach has sparked debate on the best way to address the persistent issues affecting Nigeria’s electricity sector.
