Adesina, Lumumba, Tomori among 1,000 Scientists to Address Health, Climate Issues in December

Over 1,000 scientists from across Africa will gather in Abuja for the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) biannual conference, scheduled from December 9 to 12, 2024 with focus on critical issues such as health, climate change, and science diplomacy.

Speaking during a press briefing on Wednesday, a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at University of Benin, Professor Friday Okonofua stressed the conference’s significance, particularly in addressing vaccine shortages in Africa. “The outcomes could redefine Africa’s scientific future,” he stated.

Representing AAS President, Professor Lise Korsten, Okonofua highlighted the conference’s potential for enhancing scientific collaboration. “This marks a pivotal moment for scientific collaboration in Africa, leveraging science for continental development,” he added.

Themed “Empowering and Advancing Africa’s Scientific Enterprise,” the conference will be inaugurated by Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with the keynote address delivered by Professor Akinwunmi Adesina of the African Development Bank. Notable speakers, including Professors Patrick Lumumba and Oyewale Tomori, will contribute their diverse expertise.

This conference, the first to be held in West Africa, will also see the induction of new Fellows into the Academy and the announcement of prestigious awards, including the Olusegun Obasanjo Prize.

Founded in 1985, the AAS aims to advance scientific development across Africa, guided by a community of nearly 560 elected Fellows.
