No fewer than 62 lives have been lost to fire outbreaks and building collapses across Lagos State in the first half of 2025, according to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS).

Revealing its Mid-Year Activity Report on Monday, the agency’s Senior Public Affairs Officer, Maria Fadairo, stated, “The LSFRS has announced the release of its Mid-Year Activity Report for January to June 2025, highlighting key emergency response statistics and operational successes.”

The report detailed that the LSFRS responded to 1,072 emergency incidents within six months, including 922 fires, 10 building collapses—eight of them partial—two minor explosions, 73 rescues, and 65 salvage missions.

Despite recording 62 fatalities, the agency rescued 252 people from life-threatening situations and saved properties worth about N64.32 billion, though losses still hit N10.72 billion.

Commenting on the figures, LSFRS Director Margaret Adeseye said, “These figures demonstrate our agency’s effectiveness in contributing to the gross domestic product while minimising damage and safeguarding lives, the environment, and assets across Lagos State.”

Speaking on the persistent risk of building failures, Gbola Aremu, manager of Titan Clan Limited, blamed poor technical oversight and unchecked greed in the real estate sector.
