Katsina Launches Statewide Survey to Tackle Malnutrition Crisis

KATSINA, Nigeria – The Katsina State Government has launched a survey to identify communities hardest hit by malnutrition across its 34 local government areas.

Acting Governor, Faruq Lawal Jobe, represented by Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Tanimu Dutsinma, launched the exercise in Katsina on Tuesday.

Jobe said the survey would assess malnutrition among children under five, measure food security, and guide interventions. “This will help us identify areas where our policies can have the greatest impact,” he noted.

He added that Katsina had procured 400 tractors, subsidised fertilisers, and invested in hybrid livestock to boost food production. The state also raised its nutrition matching fund from ₦200m in 2023 to ₦500m in 2025.

A survey previously showed a 17.5% malnutrition rate in parts of northern Katsina, which has now dropped to 11.5%.

Over 8,500 households will be surveyed by 200 trained enumerators, officials confirmed.

Statistician-General Prof. Saifullahi Sani stressed that prevention is more cost-effective than treatment, while Sheikh Ahmad Filin-Samji, chair of the malnutrition committee, reaffirmed government commitment to reducing child hunger.
