NEMA Orders Urgent Evacuation as Rising Niger River Sparks Flood Fears

ABUJA, Nigeria- The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued an urgent directive for residents in high-risk floodplains along the River Niger to evacuate without delay, following rising water levels upstream in the Republic of Benin.

In a statement released Friday in Abuja, Director-General Zubaida Umar instructed all field offices in Kebbi, Niger, and Kwara states—areas most at risk—to intensify community sensitisation and ensure residents move to safer, higher grounds.

“Immediate evacuation is necessary. We must act now to prevent avoidable loss of lives and livelihoods,” Umar said.

She also urged state governments to activate contingency plans through State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) and Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs).

NEMA pledged full commitment to coordinated flood-response measures, stressing that communities must remain vigilant and adhere strictly to evacuation advisories.

Experts warn that the three states’ proximity to Benin Republic and location along the River Niger make them particularly vulnerable. Residents are encouraged to prepare evacuation routes, secure emergency contacts, and monitor flood updates.

The agency reaffirmed that it is mobilising resources to mitigate the impact of the expected flooding.

“Preparedness is key to saving lives. Communities must heed evacuation orders immediately,” Umar added.
