UYO, Nigeria – The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a suspected fake doctor, Sunday Okon Akpan, for allegedly performing an illegal abortion that led to the death of a 35-year-old woman, Blessing Sunday Etim.
Police spokesperson DSP Timfon John confirmed the arrest in Uyo on Thursday, stating that Akpan, who runs the Full Life Medical Centre in Ikot Obio Odongo, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, is not a licensed doctor.
Trouble started when the victim’s mother reported her missing. A neighbour later spotted the suspect allegedly trying to dump the corpse in her room. Akpan reportedly fled but was tracked down by detectives.
“On August 19, 2025, at about 09:30 hours, the suspect was arrested on suspicion of conducting an illegal abortion that caused the death of a 35-year-old woman,” DSP John said.
Police disclosed that a premature foetus was discovered exiting the deceased’s body when investigators arrived. Preliminary findings revealed that Akpan, a community health worker from Afaha Offiong village in Nsit Ibom LGA, had been using his facility for unapproved procedures, including abortions.
“The suspect, who is not a licensed doctor or nurse, has been carrying out unlawful medical services at the Full Life Medical Centre, which has now been deserted,” John added.
The deceased’s body has been deposited for autopsy, while investigations continue. Police assured the public that further details will be provided as inquiries progress.
