North-West Zone Ranks Highest as PMS Hits N1,025 in July – NBS

ABUJA, Nigeria – The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says petrol prices in Nigeria averaged N1,024.99 per litre in July 2025, with the North-West zone recording the highest figures nationwide.

In its report titled “Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) Price Watch (July 2025)”, released on Thursday, the NBS said the average price represented a 33.02 per cent rise compared with N770.54 in July 2024.

However, on a month-on-month basis, petrol costs fell slightly by 1.22 per cent, dropping from N1,037.66 in June 2025.

The state-by-state analysis revealed that Jigawa State had the highest average retail price at N1,107.52 per litre, followed closely by Lagos (N1,100.29) and Sokoto (N1,100.00). In contrast, Zamfara (N884.63), Yobe (N950.60) and Kogi (N986.67) recorded the lowest pump prices during the review period.

On the zonal profile, the North-West topped the chart at N1,035.85 per litre, while the North-East posted the lowest average at N1,017.65.

The fresh NBS figures come amid price adjustments by major suppliers. On August 15, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited reduced pump prices to N865 per litre in Lagos and N890 in Abuja.

Similarly, on August 12, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery dropped its retail price to N820, days after raising it to N850.

Analysts say the gap between supplier prices and retail averages reflects ongoing distribution bottlenecks and regional disparities in Nigeria’s petroleum market.
