NELFUND Issues New Rules Linking Student Upkeep Loans to Sessions

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced fresh guidelines for the disbursement of student upkeep loans, tying payments strictly to the academic sessions of institutions.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, NELFUND said students will only be entitled to upkeep loans during their active academic year. “Upon the conclusion of an institution’s academic year, upkeep payments for that session shall automatically cease,” the agency explained.

This means students progressing into a new academic session will no longer receive upkeep allowances for the previous one. To remain eligible, applicants must reapply at the start of every academic session for both institutional charges and upkeep support.

According to NELFUND, its loan portal is being automated to reflect the adjustment, displaying only the upkeep loans collected by each student in the relevant session.

The agency also directed institutions to upload their academic calendars and sessional details promptly. “Timely submission ensures that students receive the full upkeep benefits due to them for an academic year,” the statement noted.

NELFUND’s Director of Strategic Communications, Mrs Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to “accessible, transparent, and efficient loan support for Nigerian students,” while urging cooperation from institutions and beneficiaries.

For further inquiries, NELFUND advised students and stakeholders to reach out via its official channels, including email and social media platforms.
