Nigeria Declares Safe Delivery a Right, not a Privilege

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government is intensifying efforts to guarantee free and safe maternal health services nationwide, declaring that every Nigerian woman has the right to safe delivery, regardless of economic status.

Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Pate, made this assertion in Abuja on Thursday during the commissioning of new tuberculosis diagnostic machines at the Dutsen Makaranta Primary Health Centre in the FCT.

“Pregnancy is not a disease; it’s a natural process that deserves professional attention,” he said. “The President places top priority on the health of women and mothers in Nigeria.”

Professor Pate encouraged pregnant women to attend antenatal sessions and deliver at approved health centres, assuring that the government would cover medical costs in cases of complications. “When you come to deliver, come to a facility where you will be supported by health workers,” he urged. “Thousands of women across Nigeria are already benefiting from this.”

He applauded the Federal Capital Territory Administration, led by Minister Nyesom Wike and Health Mandate Secretary Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, for spearheading maternal and child health improvements.

“The FCT is showing the way. They are working to ensure money is no longer a barrier to safe childbirth,” Pate said.

Beyond access to care, the minister highlighted the national development implications. “We are talking about the future of our children and the kind of country we want to build.”

He called on families, traditional leaders, and communities to support women in utilising available maternal health services. “Together, with your efforts and ours, we will build a healthier Nigeria,” he added.
