A devastating flood following over six hours of torrential rainfall on Sunday has left dozens missing—mostly children—and submerged more than 600 houses in Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
Communities worst hit include Shagari Low Cost, Sabon Pegi, Modire, and Yolde Pate. Residents say the flood came without warning, sweeping through homes while families were asleep.
“The water came so fast, we couldn’t take anything. My children’s room was already flooded when I woke up,” said John Audu, a father of four in Sabon Pegi.
In tears, another resident, Abubakar Adamu, said, “Many lives were lost, especially children. We’re still searching and hoping to recover those missing.
The Adamawa Police Command, in collaboration with the 23 Armoured Brigade in Yola, deployed marine officers for rescue operations.
Police spokesman DSP Suleiman Nguroje said, “The Commissioner of Police, Morris Dankwambo, directed immediate deployment of marine units to affected communities.”
Last week, the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) had warned residents in lowlands to relocate.
Victims are now calling for urgent intervention. “We need shelter, food, and medical help. Government must act fast,” pleaded Aisha Bala, a displaced mother of three.
Relief efforts are ongoing amid fears of further rainfall.
