The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Imo State has intensified its crackdown on the production of illicit drugs, focusing on crystal meth, locally called Mkpurumiri.

The State Commandant, Ibrahim Ohida, disclosed on Saturday that that the agency is determined to identify and dismantle secret drug laboratories scattered across communities.

“One of our top priorities now is to locate and shut down the illegal labs where these banned substances are manufactured,” Ohida stated.

He described the new strategy as a proactive step to tackle the alarming rise in synthetic drug abuse, especially among young people in the Southeast.

Ohida urged residents to join the fight by volunteering credible information, assuring them that all tips would remain confidential.

“Community vigilance and timely reporting can significantly curb the production and distribution of methamphetamines and other illicit substances,” he added.

The NDLEA boss stressed that the battle against drugs requires strong collaboration between security agencies and the public.

He appealed to community leaders to sensitise youths about the dangers of crystal meth, which has destroyed many lives.

The renewed push comes as the state grapples with the social and health impacts of Mkpurumiri abuse.
