The Kanawa Pharmaceutical Coordinated Wholesale Centre (KPP-CWC) in Kano has confiscated substandard drugs and unwholesome food items worth over N1.3 billion, in a major clampdown aimed at safeguarding public health.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, the Superintendent Pharmacist of the centre, Furera Ado, revealed that 40.3% of the pharmaceutical products sampled failed the Active Ingredient Content test, classifying them as substandard.

“Special attention was given to high-demand medicines such as antimalarials, antibiotics, and analgesics,” she said.

According to her, some of the seized drugs have already been handed over to the state committee on drug abuse for immediate destruction. “These products, if not intercepted, could have led to treatment failures and avoidable deaths,” Ado warned.

She noted that the KPP-CWC, fully registered and supervised by licensed pharmacists, has recorded major breakthroughs in identifying fake, falsified, and expired drugs.

Ado also announced the acquisition of a WHO-certified cold room from the U.S. with 24-hour solar power backup. “It ensures temperature control for thermolabile products, including vaccines,” she said.
