Nigeria, Saint Lucia to Establish Formal Diplomatic Relations

President Bola Tinubu and Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre of Saint Lucia have pledged to formally establish diplomatic relations between their two countries, with both leaders expressing optimism about expanding bilateral cooperation.

According to a statement released by the special adviser to the president on information and strategy Bayo Onanuga on Sunday, during a courtesy visit by President Tinubu to the Prime Minister’s official residence in Castries on the second day of his state visit, both leaders highlighted the deep cultural and historical ties between Africa and the Caribbean. President Tinubu described Saint Lucians as “valued friends and brothers” and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening people-to-people connections.

The Nigerian leader noted that the two nations shared common aspirations and history, and said ongoing efforts would lay the groundwork for cooperation in trade, tourism, education, cultural exchange, and consular services. He also called for closer collaboration on global issues such as climate change, disaster response, and development financing.

Prime Minister Pierre welcomed the dialogue, recalling Saint Lucia’s longstanding links to Nigeria through figures like Sir Darnley Alexander, Nigeria’s fourth Chief Justice. He outlined areas for potential partnership, including agriculture, education, health, tourism, and cultural promotion, and spoke of Nigeria’s leadership role within Africa.

President Tinubu also met with Saint Lucia’s Governor-General, Cyril Charles, at Government House, where they discussed opportunities for collaboration within the Commonwealth, particularly in climate action and socioeconomic development.
