The Lagos State Government has ordered the immediate reopening of the Oko-Oba Abattoir in Agege after its operators met key sanitation and hygiene requirements.

The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the decision in a statement posted on his official X account on Monday.

According to him, “The operators have substantially complied with the minimum benchmark for the operations of abattoirs in the state which was flagrantly flouted initially, necessitating the closure.”

Wahab emphasized that the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources will carry out monthly inspections to ensure continuous compliance.

“Part of the conditions for the reopening is that on a monthly basis, the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources officials will conduct a periodic inspection of the facilities at the abattoir,” he said.

He further warned operators to steer clear of unsanitary practices, waste mismanagement, and unhygienic handling of animal products.

Reiterating the government’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental violations, Wahab reminded operators of their obligations under existing environmental laws.

He stressed, “There are laws guiding abattoir operations in the state. Wastewater and blood from meat processing must be treated and not discharged into public drains.”

The abattoir had been shut down on June 19, 2025, over poor sanitary conditions and non-compliance with environmental standards.
