A group has called on the federal government to provide clarity over recent conflicting claims by the Presidency and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) regarding the number of renovated Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across the country.
MonITNG, a civic platform tracking public projects nationwide, on Saturday, said the figures released by the government have raised serious questions. While the NPHCDA reported that 991 PHCs have been revived, President Bola Tinubu recently claimed that 8,800 centres have been upgraded with N45.9 billion spent.
“These conflicting figures cannot be ignored,” MonITNG said. “Primary healthcare is the bedrock of our health system – it’s where millions go first for maternal care, immunisations, and basic treatment. If these centres have truly been upgraded, then every Nigerian should be able to see and feel the impact.”
The group stressed that the matter was not political but about “mothers walking kilometres to find help, babies who need vaccines, and rural communities where healthcare is often a luxury.”
“Public announcements must be backed by public access to the facts. Transparency is not a favour; it is a duty,” it added.
MonITNG urged the NPHCDA to publish a comprehensive list of the renovated PHCs to enable public verification.
“Let communities confirm if the health centres near them have been improved. Let the facts speak. We are ready to assist in tracking these facilities and ensuring they are truly serving Nigerians,” the group said.
According to MonITNG, healthcare should not remain merely in official speeches but must be accessible through “well-equipped and functional PHCs in our neighbourhoods.”
