Severe Heatwave Hits Eastern US, 160 Million at Risk

A dangerous heatwave has gripped the eastern third of the United States, placing nearly 160 million people under heat alerts as temperatures soar this week. In New York City, forecasts predict highs of 102°F (39°C), with authorities warning of life-threatening conditions, especially for vulnerable residents.

“This extreme heat will not just be uncomfortable and oppressive for New Yorkers,” said Mayor Eric Adams, noting the city loses about 500 residents annually to heat-related illnesses. Cooling centres, libraries, and recreation facilities have been opened for public relief.

The National Weather Service confirmed record-breaking temperatures in parts of the Northeast, with Central Park’s 96°F (36°C) on Monday tying a record set in 1888. Meteorologists blame the conditions on a heat dome — a high-pressure system trapping hot air and preventing overnight cooling.

Extreme heat is the deadliest weather-related hazard in the US, surpassing hurricanes and tornadoes. In Washington, the heat index reached a stifling 110°F (43°C), prompting local authorities to activate cooling centres and extend pool hours.

Scientists link the escalating frequency and severity of heatwaves to human-driven climate change. The year 2024 was the planet’s hottest on record, with 2025 expected to rank in the top three. (AFP)
