JUST IN: Tinubu Discloses Plans to Visit Benue Wednesday over Violent Killings

President Bola Tinubu says he will clear his schedule to pay a condolence visit to the people of Benue State on Wednesday.

“I will adjust my programme and go see Benue people on Wednesday,” Tinubu reportedly said on Monday when he commissioned the Greater Abuja Water Supply Network in the nation’s capital.

The President also sympathised with the people of the state and those who lost their loved ones in the attacks.

The President also urged the people of the state to manage their diversity, anger and frustration and live as one united people.

Benue State has been witnessing a cycle of violent attacks by suspected herdsmen for some time.

The recent killings have left several casualties raising the figures of displaced persons in the state.

On Monday, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, confirmed that the coordinated attacks by unidentified gunmen have forced 6,527 people displaced, triggering a humanitarian crisis in the State. NEMA further disclosed that lactating mothers, pregnant women, children below age 18 and elderly persons are most affected.

But yet to be confirmed records put the fatality figure of the series of killings in the last few weeks at over 160.

The attacks have been linked to nomadic herdsmen scattered across different communities in Benue State, making the conflicts to linger for years.

Leading opposition figures, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi had criticised the president for not visiting the people in these troubled times.
