The Katsina State Government is stepping up efforts to shield its healthcare system from climate change impacts through climate-resilient infrastructure and integrated public health planning, AHR reports.
At a stakeholder training on Saturday in Kano, Dr. Muawiyah Aliyu, representing the Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Musa Funtua, stressed the urgency of adaptation. “Diseases that were once easily manageable have now become more complex due to rising climate impacts,” he said.
AHR gathered that the state’s strategic interventions include building climate-resilient facilities, community WASH projects, awareness campaigns, and training healthcare workers on climate-health integration. Solar power systems are also being installed in facilities to reduce fossil fuel reliance.
Commissioner Funtua noted, “Planning is essential, but without adequate funding, implementation becomes a challenge.”
The state has created a three-tier climate-health coordination structure, aligning with the Health National Adaptation Plan.
“This helps integrate climate resilience at the primary healthcare level,” said Hajiya Rukayya Muhammad of the National Council on Climate Change.
