The Kano State Government has advised residents to ensure animals meant for sacrifice during the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir festival are healthy and certified fit for consumption.

The warning, issued through the state Ministry of Health, aims to safeguard public health and prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases.

A statement on Tuesday by the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Nabilusi Abubakar K/Na’isa, quoted the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, as stressing the importance of buying and slaughtering only healthy animals.

Dr. Yusuf warned that diseases in animals could be transmitted to humans, especially when meat is not properly handled, cooked, or preserved.

“Residents must be cautious. Thorough cooking of meat is essential to kill harmful microorganisms,” he said, urging mothers and food handlers to maintain strict hygiene.

He also advised that meat should be washed with clean water before cooking or storing, noting that this simple measure could significantly reduce the risk of contamination.

The commissioner assured the public of the state’s preparedness to handle any health emergencies during the Sallah celebration.

He said state-owned hospitals had been stocked with essential drugs and emergency supplies under the directive of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Dr. Yusuf reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to preventive healthcare and urged the public to adhere to medical guidelines during the festivities.
