The death toll from the devastating flood in Mokwa, Niger State, has risen to 200, with more than 1,000 people still missing, according to Deputy Governor Comrade Yakubu Garba.

Garba disclosed the figures while receiving former presidential candidate Peter Obi at the Government House in Minna on Tuesday. Obi visited to commiserate with the state, as the disaster displaced over 3,000 people and destroyed more than 2,000 homes.

“This is one of the worst disasters we’ve witnessed,” Garba said. “Bodies are still being recovered, and the number of missing persons exceeds 1,000.”

The flood also damaged infrastructure, including roads and bridges. Obi, accompanied by former Finance Minister Bernadus Phan, donated ₦20 million to victims and urged the federal government to invest in flood mitigation.

“Nigeria’s future lies in agriculture, not oil,” Obi said, describing Niger as vital to the country’s food security.

He called for urgent action, not rhetoric, to prevent future disasters.
