The Federal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH) in Lafia, Nasarawa State, has embarked on an ambitious vaccine research and development project aimed at transforming Nigeria’s healthcare landscape.
Announced during a two-day retreat in Abuja, the initiative is designed to foster innovation, strengthen infrastructure, and enhance capacity in vaccine science.
Speaking at the event on Monday, Chief Medical Director of FUTH Lafia, Dr. Ikrama Hassan, said the project aligns with the federal government’s vision of modernizing the health sector.
“The initiative aims to boost infrastructure and build staff capacity with the latest tools and knowledge in the field, and also improve healthcare delivery,” he noted. He emphasized that FUTH Lafia is poised to become a national hub for medical innovation.
The project is being executed in collaboration with leading research bodies, including Innovative Biotech in Abuja and the Centre for Advanced Medical Research and Training at Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
Director of Innovative Biotech, Prof. Simon Agwale, hailed the partnership as a significant leap forward. “This is a major breakthrough in Nigeria’s push for locally-developed vaccines and tailored medical solutions,” Agwale said.
